Economic association agreement between Ukraine and EU is political, experts say

Today in Moscow a closed-door meeting was held between the prime ministers of Russia and Ukraine, Dmitry Medvedev and Nikolai Azarov. The meeting was organized to discuss the most painful subject of bilateral relationships, the upcoming signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and EU at the Vilnius summit, which, in fact, will close ways to Eurasian integration to Ukraine and will nullify the efforts of the Russian Federation to bring Ukraine into the Customs Union.

Vyacheslav Kovalenko, Russian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Georgia (2006-2008) and Armenia (2009-2013), has commented on Armenia’s choice of the EU or the Eurasian Union as the course of its further development. The ex-ambassador said that the association agreement of Armenia and the EU was a large document for trade-economic relations and excluded points on visa-free regime.

Armenia and the European Union have successfully concluded negotiations on an agreement on a deep and comprehensive free trade area, which is part of the Association Agreement with the EU. But it could affect relations between Armenia and the Eurasian community.

Presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus to discuss Eurasian Union project

The presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus - Vladimir Putin, Nazarbayev and Alexander Lukashenko - are going to meet in Astana on Wednesday in order to discuss the Eurasian Union project.Among other issues the presidents will discuss the Eurasian Economic Union project that is expected to be launched on January 1st, 2015.
